The food researchers in the study indicated that the heart-health benefits of tart cherries are due to a naturally occurring compound in this ruby red fruit. This compound is called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are responsible for giving the cherry it bright red hue. However, cherries aren’t the only fruit that is a source of anthocyanins. This compound has also been discovered in blueberries. The blue fruit has been found to help with heart health, too. In fact, according to another published research the cherry anthocyanins have been found to protect against from damage by oxidative stress. Thus, helping the body to fight off the ravaging affects of free radicals. The greatest benefit of the tart cherry is it is available in a number of different varieties including cherry juice, tart cherry capsules, dried cherries and even the fresh fruit during the July summer harvest.
