Tart Cherry vs Black Cherry
One of the greatest debate since the beginning of time is “tart cherry vs black cherry”. It seems these two varieties of cherry have been battling it out over which one is the best. Which is the best for maintaining healthy joint? Which is best for getting a more restful night’s sleep? Finally, which on simply tastes better?
A few years back I did a complete video explaining the Tart Cherry vs Black Cherry, but recently several customers ask if they could get something they could read and not simply a video. So I went back and took all of the information contained in the video and placed it on this page. That way, individuals have two ways to learn about this ongoing battle between these two cherry giants.
So the start, cherries, in general have been associated with healthy joints, soothing sore muscles and helping with sleep patterns. However, there is a difference between the two varieties.
The Area to Look at is the Anthocyanins:
Anthocyanins, a phenol compound, are a naturally occurring antioxidant found in both varieties, however according to CMI, the tart variety does have a higher concentration. Anthocyanins are responsible for giving this tree fruit its color. However, not only this fruit, but all fruit in nature. To date, over 350 varieties of anthocyanins have been discovered. Eating and Baking with the Cherries:
Due to the higher natural sugar content, many people prefer to eat the fresh black cherry over the tart cherry. This high sugar content makes the dark variety more palatable. However, for baking the tart cherry is the clear winner. This is the type the majority of recipes suggest when making many cherry recipes. The next time you are making a recipe involving cherries, you’ll discover it will be calling for the use of the tart.
